summer program course descriptions

Advanced Laser Jr Sailing

beginner level sailors (7-16 years)- river rookies

Introduces the basics: Wind and water awareness, points of sail, rigging, steering, sail trim, tacking and gybing, docking, safety, capsize and recovery, basic navigation and right of way rules, knot tying. Beginners are teamed up with a sailing buddy on the water. Skills are taught through a combination of chalkboard sessions (lectures), visual aids, demonstration, practical drills, games and extensive on the water practice. Some sailors may have to repeat this level before advancing, especially the younger ones in this category.
Session Options: 8 days (Mon - Thurs) over 2 consecutive weeks

intermediate level sailors (7-16 YEARS) - RIVER SKIPPERS

Sailors who have completed Beginner Level (Rookies) Optimist or Beginner Level (Rookies) Sunfish/Laser/420, or have comparable previous experience. Sailors progress to single-handing, build on the basics and work on developing confidence in boat handling, effective sail trim and an overall competence in skills. It is not unusual for sailors to repeat this level before advancing.

Session Options: 8 days (Mon - Thurs) over 2 consecutive weeks
2017 BEG1 - June 19,   BEG2 - July 3 (Mo, Wed, Thurs, Fri), BEG3 - July 17,  BEG4 - July 31

 advanced level sailors (8-18 years) - river captains

Weekly sessions
2 or more required in order to progress

Sailors with a high level of competence ready to take their game to the next level. Understanding Racing: Competition, tactics, rules plus advanced boat handling, advanced sail trim.
Fo
r sailors to improve their skills and advance, they should attend multiple sessions. Sign up for one or more sessions of eight sessions offered weekly (Mon- Thurs) starting June 19th through Aug 7th.

travel team  racing sailors 7-18 years - bay racers

Weekly Sessions. Specialized coaching session in preparation for the summer regatta season in session 1 and 2. Continued coaching and travel to regional regattas every week throughout the summer.

Travel Team Racers - The prerequisites for participation are club membership (Junior or Full Family), coach recommendation and Program Director approval. Includes high level coaching, boat use when required, and logistical support for participation in NERYC junior club regattas and regional CBYRA Junior regattas throughout the sailing season. Fleets: Opti Green and RWB, Lasers, 420's. For racers to build skills, keep pace and remain competitive, multiple sessions are a must. For maximum benefit 4, 6 or 8 sessions recommended. Sign up for minimum 2 or more of the summer sessions offered weekly (Mon- Thurs) starting June 19th through Aug 7th.
