summer program course descriptions

Advanced Laser Jr Sailing

beginner level sailors (8-16 years)- river rookies
Sailors, particularly the younger ones,  may need to repeat this level before graduating to the intermdeiate level group

Introduces the basics: Wind and water awareness, points of sail, rigging, steering, sail trim, tacking and gybing, docking, safety, capsize and recovery, basic navigation and right of way rules, knot tying. Beginners are teamed up with a sailing buddy on the water. Skills are taught through a combination of chalkboard sessions (lectures), visual aids, demonstration, practical drills, games and extensive on the water practice. Some sailors may have to repeat this level before advancing, especially the younger ones in this category.

Bi-Weekly Sessions - 8 days (Mon - Thurs) over 2 consecutive weeks

intermediate level sailors (8-16 years)- river skippers
Multiple recommended in order to progress

Sailors who have completed Beginner Level (Rookies) Optimist or Beginner Level (Rookies) Sunfish/Laser/420, or have comparable previous experience. Sailors progress to single-handing Optis or Lasers, or contiue to develop partnering skills on 420's and FJ's as applicable. at This level we build on the basics and work on developing confidence in boat handling, effective sail trim and an overall competence in skills. It is not unusual for sailors to repeat this level before advancing.

Bi-Weekly sessions   8 days (Mon - Thurs) over 2 consecutive weeks

advanced level sailor (9-16 years)- river captains
Multiple recommended in order to progress

Sailors with a high level of competence ready to take their game to the next level. Understanding Racing: Competition, tactics, rules plus advanced boat handling, advanced sail trim. For sailors to improve their skills and advance, they should attend multiple sessions..

travel team racing sailors (9-18 years)-bay racers

Half or full summer Sessions.
Specialized coaching and travel to regional regattas throughout the summer.

Travel Team Racers - The prerequisites for participation are club membership, coach recommendation and Program Director approval. Includes high level coaching, boat use when required, and logistical support for participation in NERYC junior club regattas and regional CBYRA Junior regattas throughout the sailing season. Approx. 14 regattas per summer. Fleets: Opti Green and RWB, Lasers, 420's. For racers to build skills, keep pace and remain competitive, multiple sessions are a must.
Parents are responsible for regatta entry fees and regatta activity fees per event in addition to session fees.

Minimum fist 4 weeks. For maximum benefit 8 sessions recommended.
